Footballers reach Semis!
On Friday 15th March, Hazelbank Primary School took part in the Ballymena ‘Junior Cup’, at the Ballymena showgrounds. The 11-man squad made up of a mixture of P6 and P7’s did themselves proud and built on last years success.
After a slight delay, the boys were eager to get going and they took this energy into their first game, which saw them eventually getting their reward to earn a 1-0 victory against The Diamond. Their next game was very challenging, defending well against a strong Moorfields side. This persistence led to a 0-0 draw. Similarly, their next game and perhaps a bit of a derby match, Clough gave us a competitive game, with end to end action and a fair result of 0-0.
Going into the last game we knew we needed 3 points to have a chance of going through. The boys were rallied up and determination was high. Hazelbank’s relentless attacks saw Lucas (P6) and Lucas (P7) scoring a goal each against Dunclug!
8 points from 4 games secured 2nd position in the group stage and set up a semi final match versus Groggan. Groggan won the semi final 2-0 and went on to win the whole tournament, worthy winners overall.
The boys should be very proud of their endeavour and achievement of reaching a semi-final!
The player of the day was Noah, and joint runners-up were Dexter and Blake.
Thanks to the parents for coming along to watch and to Mr. Calderwood for coaching the team.
